This is a list of all 115 churches still standing in Venice, including the
deconsecrated ones, plus the three non-Catholic ones.
The 23 churches on the islands are listed separately, after the main list.
Where a church has more than one possible name the most common, and usually
local, version is used.
The alternative names are given too, in grey.
Marin Sanudo, writing in 1493, counted 137 churches in Venice and on
the islands. With the steady rate of additions over the centuries
since and then the sudden subtractions due to Napoleon we today have a total
uncannily close to that 1493 figure.
The churches on the list in bold are the 11 best,
I think, and
so have pages
to themselves.
